The company's sustainability mission and vision
Our company is committed to
promoting sustainable development, reducing environmental impact, and building
a responsible future. We adhere to eco-friendly practices, encourage efficient
resource use, and strive to create value for society. Sustainability is at the
core of our operations – today and tomorrow.
Our commitment to sustainability
Our responsibility
Our respect and appreciation for nature makes us conscious. And our consciousness determines our environmentally friendliness. By working with live wood, we can keep our promise of being environmentally friendly, because of its high density and durable qualities.
We respect nature and create
garden interior objects that last.
The Zero CO2 Mission
The carbon dioxide stored in our products compensates for the emissions from the raw material extraction and production process.
In our study (2019, Sustinere) we calculated, that Carbon removed from the atmosphere and stored into material goods and final products amounted to 16 888 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, being over 8 times higher than emissions.
FSC® & PEFC certified wood
By supporting responsible wood sourcing and forest management, we keep our promise of being environmentally friendly. Therefore, we are certified by Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC ®). Certificate registration Code: NC-COC-013354. FSC License Code: FSC-C002739
Our products are certified under the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsment of Forest Certification) system, ensuring sustainable forest management and ethical sourcing. PEFC Certificate Number: VK-PEFC-COC-0031
Zero waste
Well cared for, EKJU furniture will last longer than it takes a new tree to grow. We know, that if well maintained, the lifespan of EKJU furniture exceeds the growth of new tree (70-80 years). All wood leftovers are reused for heating our own facilities and timber drying kilns. Nothing goes to waste.
Energy and resource efficiency
The company has started to switch to electric pallet trucks to reduce its dependence on diesel.
EKJU employs LEAN principles through a range of productivity enhancement techniques to streamline operations, conserve resources and markedly reduce forklift mileage.
In the future, EKJU plans to further develop its sustainability development by investing in solutions to replace existing wood chip boilers with CHP plants.
Forestation
There is an old Latvian proverb that says: "He who gives to the poor will never lack". It has a deep philosophical meaning that our company believes in - to give back to nature what we take from it. It is important for us to maintain harmony with nature and future generations.
Every year, EKJU employees and their families plant new forests and contribute to the forest regeneration process.
Health and safety
A safe and healthy working environment is at the core
of all our business activities and processes. It also plays an important role
in supporting productivity and efficiency at work. Our aim is to provide an
accident-free workplace for all. EKJU's safety commitment applies equally, not
only to our own employees, but also to contractors and other visitors at our
sites. Everyone is expected and encouraged to take an active role in supporting
the continuous improvement of safety.
Social responsibility
Employees
The EKJU is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace where all employees are treated equally and have the opportunity to contribute to the company's success. The professional and personal development and growth of our employees is essential to our continued success.
Non-Discrimination
The company's internal processes set out procedures for reporting inappropriate behavior by management or colleagues, but in addition, safe and reliable whistleblowing channels are in place so that employees have the opportunity to report to management if they experience any form of human rights violation, discrimination, bullying, sexual
harassment, corruption, conflict of interest, etc. at work. EKJU has a common remuneration system.
